NOW YOU CAN GO BIRDING WITH POMPIE

Based in Windhoek, Pompie Burger is an orthopaedic surgeon whose pastime passion is photography, in particular birding. Pompie has been a regular contributor to Travel News Namibia for over a decade. His current series in TNN, Birding with Pompie, has inspired a new initiative. In February, eight birding enthusiasts will join him on a 10-day trip from Windhoek to Katima Mulilo. The tour will navigate past all Pompie’s favourite Zambezi birding hotspots and guests will be able to sharpen their birding photography skills with this experienced guide and teacher at the helm. Venture Media will team up with tourism partner, Wilderness Expeditions, as part of Wilderness Safaris Namibia, on this latest adventure.

ABOUT THE ADVENTURE

Pompie’s Amazing Birding Safari will take six lucky guests on a 10-day tour of Namibia’s northeastern Zambezi Region. Departing from Windhoek, the tour will explore national parks and three of the major rivers of the northeast, including the Okavango, the Kwando and the Zambezi. Along the way, Pompie will act as both birding guide and photography tutor, helping guests to hone their skills in the art of capturing these winged creatures through the lens!

Wilderness Safaris will set up campsites for guests to return to each night after a day of scouring treetops, river courses and bushlands for lifers in a safari vehicle with Pompie.

ABOUT POMPIE

Pompie Burger – Vakansiehouer | Boom planter | Skelm roker

When he’s not being a doctor, Pompie Burger has his camera in hand and is following aviary creatures around Namibia.

For 40 years Pompie has been an avid birder and photographer, his love both leading to a flourishing pastime-turned-calling for writing and delighting readers with the birds of Namibia. Besides the abundance of stories he has contributed to the pages of Travel News Namibia, Pompie has also published two books with Venture Publications: Birds of Namibia: A photographic journey and Birds of Namibia: The journey continues.

His love for Namibia, and the Blue Bulls, jumps from the pages as he recalls birding adventures across the country, though he stands firm that the Caprivi (now Zambezi) will always be his favourite spot to glimpse and photograph his beloved winged friends.
