Immediately after walking in at the front door of Anandi Guesthouse at 14 Nelken Street in Swakopmund, I feel at home.

The spacious house with its large lounge area and comfortable seating arrangement reminds me of family vacations when we are all under one roof. I immediately make myself at home and enjoy a cup of coffee while paging lazily through a magazine.  “This guesthouse was designed for people who want a homey atmosphere away from home,” says owner Johan-André Fourie.

Anandi, which opened its doors in July last year, has 15 bedroom units – 12 double and three triple rooms, all equipped with single beds, a coffee station, television and fridge. For the businessman there is a small office space and wireless Internet available.

Breakfast is served at the crack of dawn, with coffee already brewing when I wake up. A warm breakfast of toast, sausages, bacon, eggs and a variety of cold meats and cheeses is served, with plenty of coffee, tea and juice to go round. For health-conscious guests there is muesli, yoghurt, fruit salad and cereal. “Dinner is provided when pre-ordered, and then we treat our guests to a real home-made meal,” says Johan-André.

“We are situated in a residential area away from the hustle and bustle of Swakopmund’s night life – perfect for a real break-away,” he adds, but still close enough for guests to enjoy a great day of shopping, or simply laze around on the beach.

Johan-André and his wife, Yolandi, are co-owners of the guesthouse. Although they receive the occasional businessman, they focus mainly on tourists. “We get lots of self-drivers,” he says. The couple strives to offer good value for money. “And best of all, we are child friendly.” They have children of their own, and indeed, the guesthouse just wouldn’t be the same without children running around, laughing and having fun.
