The recent addition of a 45-seater boat at NWR’s Hardap Dam resort is a step towards increased interest in the park as well as an uptake in visitor numbers. NWR invested close to N$1 million in the boat. The official launch of the boat took place on the placid waters of the dam on Thursday, 29 July, with Governor of the Hardap Region, Esme Isaaks, cutting the ribbon. Speaking at the event, Isaaks encouraged locals and especially the youth to make use of the new boat for recreational purposes. Before the launch of the boat rides on the dam, activities at Hardap were limited to game drives, trail walks, bicycle rides as well as angling. The area has a wide arrange of wildlife to see, including oryx, zebra, springbok, giraffe and even black rhino. However, from the deck of the boat, these animals can now be view up close as they graze along the banks. Other activities now available to guests is the opportunity to get close to the small islands that dot the dam, which are populated by waterbirds and are a highlight for birdwatchers. Camp manager of Hardap Resort, Sunday Nelenge, noted that the boat would ensure an additional drawcard for visitors to the dam. The boat can be used for short outings, as well as functions or events such as birthday parties and even intimate weddings. Hardap Dam covers 2,500 hectares when at full capacity. Visitors to Hardap can book a stay in the VIP rooms, family and bush chalets, dormitory or camping sites.
