A couple of weeks ago, the 7th of April to be exact, it was my brother-in-law’s birthday. To celebrate, Nambwa Tented Lodge organised an island breakfast for us which was absolutely amazing. My brother- in-law is from Germany and he had never celebrated his birthday away from home before; so to get such a stunning surprise breakfast was a fantastic way to start the day.
After breakfast we sadly had to leave Nambwa and we started heading to Livingstone around 10 AM. It was barely 15 minutes after we had left the lodge and we spotted 3 cheetahs running away into the bush. I immediately stopped the car, but there was no trace of them.
We got lucky however; they had killed an impala right next to the road. I didn’t see it at first, we had driven right passed it. I decided to reverse the car and wait for them to come back an finish what they started.
It didn’t take to long before the first cheetah popped up again and slowly made her way back to the impala feast. The two others followed her at a safe distance. It was then that we could clearly see the larger female had no blood on her at all, and the other two youngsters had very bright red blood stains all over their faces.
This must have been a mother teaching her youngsters how to hunt. Judging by their size, it is possible that this could have been their first kill.
We stayed and watched all three of them for almost an hour. No other cars passed us, no one came to disturb us. It was fantastic! As for my brother-in-law… he got the best birthday gift possible. You don’t get to see something like this every day. It was probably his birthday luck that got us in the right place at the right time.
