Ongava Tented Camp has been named as one of four finalists in the Responsible Tourism Awards for 2017.

Ongava Tented Camp is one of four luxury lodges situated on the 30 000 hectare Ongava Private Game Reserve, next to Etosha National Park at the Anderson Gate.

“Nature first” is the vision of the families that founded Ongava in 1991 as a haven for large and rare game species. Ongava boasts a state-of-the-art, world-renowned research centre which was started by Dr Ken Stratford and his wife Sabine in 2006. The research centre conducts research on a wide variety of fauna and flora, including successful breeding populations of both white and black rhinos, as well as the rare black-faced impala outside of Etosha National Park. On top of all this Ongava has its own large, free roaming population of lions.

A perfect “living laboratory” exists on the reserve, making serious wildlife research possible. There are more than 1000 animals, including nearly 100 different mammals and a large variety of birds and reptiles to study.

At Ongava Tented Camp you will experience nature firsthand as game comes to drink water at the waterhole situated in front of the reception area. While you are busy indulging in a delicious meal, enjoying a sundowner or cooling down in the swimming pool you’ll have a view of the pride of lions a mere 20 meters away at the waterhole.

All of the en suite tents have a view over the waterhole that is not only visited by the lions, but also by herds of elephants, giraffes, waterbuck, eland and other antelope.

The camp comprises nine spacious, luxury tents with private verandas between mopane trees and unfenced wilderness. The camp was designed specifically so that the tents melt seamlessly into the environment, creating a natural and relaxed atmosphere.

The camp’s electricity is provided by a solar power plant of about 120 panels and each tent also has its own solar power hot water system. An outdoor shower contributes to the natural feel and enhances the experience of being close to nature. All soaps, shampoos and shower gels provided are biodegradable.

Activities include game drives to Etosha and within the private game reserve. Guided walking trails ensure a wonderful experience and is a paradise for birders. The experienced and friendly guides will gladly share their knowledge with you.

The three other finalists for the award include Jackalberry Lodge, Gondwana Etosha Safari Camp and Wilderness Safaris Hoanib Skeleton Coast Camp. The winner will be announced at the official opening of the Namibia Tourism Expo on 31 May at the Windhoek Show Grounds.
