Namibia will have its own version of a South African West Coast town in the near future, where bungalows and houses will be the main feature.

T he past holiday season at the coast saw jam-packed accommodation as usual, including the current campsites at Mile 14. Namibians and tourists will soon be able to have holidays similar to that of the well-known South African West Coast however.

A new holiday resort will be developed north of Swakopmund at Mile 14. The concession area, known as Mile 14, covers a distance of 8 km along the sea and 1,5 km inland from the high tide mark.

The project has already been approved by the board of Namibia Wildlife Resorts and Sun Karros, the developers of the Daan Viljoen Nature Reserve, will be in charge of the development.

The development phase of the project is estimated to last for about two years and in the third year amenities will be available to visitors. The administrative process, which will include an environmental impact study, will start immediately.

The developers will construct bungalows and the public will also be allowed to build houses in designated areas. The goal is to create an environmentally friendly West Coast-like town.

As far as the availability of water for the resort is concerned, the pipeline between Henties Bay and Swakopmund will be utilised. The desalination of sea water will remain an option. Recycling of water will be a priority however. Solar power will be the main source of electricity at the resort. The West Coast culture will be seen in the houses, as spacious dirt roads will lead to the accommodation and each house will be built with the characteristic large doors seen in South Africa.

The development will not be densely populated, houses will be spaced far apart. The resort will be known as Mile 14 and Windpomp 14 will be the central restaurant and shopping spot.
