The Oshakati Open Market has been highly anticipated, construction is now finished and it will be inaugurated shortly after elections.
The spectacular market was built at a total cost of N$80 million. The opening of the market has been postponed since last year June. The council awaited the arrival of the lift observation tower from Germany which still had to be fitted.
600 vendors will be accommodated at this new market, the existing market can accommodate only 200 vendors. The different departments of the market have been named after indigenous trees, as the designers have incorporated biodiversity into its structure.
The observation tower consists of 12 floors, which gives visitors an aerial view of the town. This is named after the surrounding villages.
Vendors will not be allowed to peddle around town and are therefore encouraged to make use of the new facilities. Vendors along the road can be hit by cars and the food that they sell are exposed to dust and insects, the market is thus a better option.
The new market houses retail stalls, a public meeting hall, an administrative office and an information kiosk. There are also public toilets, a children’s playground, a seasonal food market, cold storage facilities, a craft market, a braai and raw meat market, a bus terminal and the 37 metre high observation tower.
Passengers will be loaded and off-loaded at the market along their journeys to other places once the market is opened. Buses will not be allowed to operate from other places in town.
Eventually the current market of 1.7 hectare will be sold to investors for further expansion in town.
