WATCH THEIR MASTERPIECES UNFOLD AT THE TEAM NAMIBIA COOK-OFF FINALE!

 The finalists for Team Namibia’s PLATE OF NAMIBIA cooking competition have been announced in the Capital on Tuesday, 1st April 2014.  These amateur cooks were selected by the Namibian Chefs Association (NCA) for their impressive culinary abilities and creative approach to the PLATE OF NAMIBIA Seafood Challenge. 

Contestants were required to submit their uniquely Namibian recipes for a three-course menu, featuring seafood, using only Team Namibia ingredients. These selected finalists demonstrated the diversity of Namibian cuisine in their entries: 

  • Chantel Kesslau (18) from Windhoek works at Securitas Insurance Brokers,
  • Heidi Sudwischer (22) from Windhoek is an artist and event manager for Famaz Attak and Gazza,
  • Jacqueline do Rego (28) from Swakopmund is an Air Traffic Control Officer at Walvis Bay Airport,
  • Jocelyn Fordred (42) from Brakwater is self-employed,
  • Kieran Hayward (22) from Windhoek is a full-time student,
  • Meraai Kruger (27) from Windhoek works at Belvedere Boutique Hotel,
  • Ndapewa Ithana (35) from Windhoek is self-employed,
  • Raj Rallan (45) from Windhoek is the General Manager at Sunita Cables Namibia.

Each finalist received an N$ 1,000 voucher from Pick n Pay Namibia to purchase their Team Namibia ingredients for the finals, as well as Team Namibia aprons; recipe books from the Namibian Fish Consumption Promotion Trust, tickets to the Namibia Food and Wine Festival and condiments from Desert Hills.

To highlight Team Namibia’s core principle of UUKUMWE and the strength of working together, this year’s PLATE OF NAMIBIA finalists will cook-off in teams to compete for the coveted prizes. As an added bonus, each team will be assigned a professional chef to mentor and cook with them in the finals:

  • Chef Aurelius Katjirua:  Katjirua Catering Supplies,
  • Chef Gustav Uaeta: Head Chef – Otjimbondona Lodge,
  • Chef Rhona Strauss: Lodge Manager – N/a’an ku sê Lodge,
  • Chef Uwe Hanssen: Head Chef – Tug (Swakopmund).

Winning masterpieces will compete for a share of prizes worth N$ 65,000 in front of a panel of celebrity judges.  The PLATE OF NAMIBIA judges are all members of the NCA and their palates are ready for the finalists’ creations at the cook-off final at the Namibia Food and Wine Festival this Friday:

  • Ralf Herrgott, Chef Lecturer at Polytechnic of Namibia,
  • Fortune Kangeehi, MasterChef South Africa Finalist,
  • David Thomas, three-time Namibia Chef of the Year.
