The Rare and Endangered Species Trust (REST) is a non-profit educational centre located on a small farm about 47 km south of Otjiwarongo.

The Trust was originally founded as a support and research organisation for the Cape vulture, but soon expanded into a safe haven for the Forgotten Five Plus 1, to wit the Cape vulture, dwarf python, African wild dog, ground pangolin, Damara dik-dik, and spotted rubber frog.

Says director and founder Maria Diekmann, “These animals represent biodiversity within the entire land ecosystem of Namibia.”

The latest development at REST was the unexpected birth of a pangolin pup, which caused much excitement and provided a jump start for research into the species.

When it’s feeding day be sure to visit the Vulture Restaurant, which turns into a hive of activity when hungry marabou storks, tawny eagles and white-backed, lappet-faced and Cape vultures arrive for lunch. A curious warthog and jackal often show up for the feeding party.
