Namibia is an adventure destination to be explored and conquered all year round. This year the wide range of adventures on offer will be highlighted at the annual Adventure Travel World Summit (ATWS) scheduled to be held in the coastal resort of Swakopmund from 26 to 31 October, hosted by the Adventure Travel Trade Association.
We cornered a few adventure activity operators and picked their brains to find out what they regarded as the best options to leave adventure-hungry travellers with a smile of contentment. This is what Nico Scholtz, director and head guide, Scarab Enterprises, had to say:
Why do you think Namibia is the ultimate adventure destination?
Namibia is one of the last wildernesses in Africa. With such a small population, outdoor activities in many cases involve us being alone in the wild. This takes us out of our comfort zones and much deeper into the realms of Mother Nature.
What is the best place in Namibia to live the adventure?
Namibia has so many beautiful locations, all of which have their own attraction. I love spending time hiking and climbing at the Brandberg and Spitzkoppe, but also relish the extensive focus required to explore some of Namibia’s cave systems.
From which countries do your most enthusiastic visitors hail?
They come from all over. Most have a fairly good idea of what they want and what to expect in Namibia, and as such, they are all enthusiastic.
What is your advice for people who have never been here, as in where should they go and how should they plan their first Namibian adventure?
It all depends on what you want to do and where your appetite lies. Namibia has it all, from deep-sea fishing and tracking desert rhino on foot, to ascending the ‘Matterhorn of Africa’ [Spitzkoppe] and diving the biggest subsurface lake in the world. My advice? Do your homework, decide what you want to do, contact the Namibia Tourism Board and adventure specialists, and plan your visit from there.
On a scale of one to ten – one being a walk on the beach, and 10 climbing Kilimanjaro – where would you rate what you can do in Namibia?
Namibia offers everything: from 1 to 10.
