A Namibian Honeymoon: Rose petals and champagne, anyone?

Where are the most romantic places in Namibia? That’s a hard question – there are just too many places to pick from! A stunning location like Namibia is bound to have its fair share of isolated spots with which to tempt the starry-eyed newlyweds. That is why we’ve compiled a short list of the ten most romantic places in Namibia for royally in love couples to spend their honeymoons.

Wolwedans Private Camp

A dream-like landscape uninterrupted with no other people or structures for miles and miles, Wolwedans is part of the NamibRand, one of the largest private nature reserves in Africa. No one but you and your significant other. With private chefs to create decadent meals with organic fresh produce (produced in the Wolwedans gardens) and a butler to take care of every need, the Wolwedans Private Camp is a remote and romantic honeymoon experience, set in a valley that is completely private and set apart from the rest of the reserve. Game drives and sunset drinks make up the itinerary, complete with supper under the stars. Stargazing can be done from the deck, with the reserve’s night skies the clearest in Africa.

Onguma – The Fort

With only eleven mini-suites and just one exclusive honeymoon suite, all set 50 metres apart, Onguma the Fort has privacy in spades. The reserve boasts a family of black rhino inhabitants. Set on a 34 000 ha reserve on the eastern side of Etosha (a romantic destination all in itself), the proximity to nature is exemplified by the option of an open-air shower.

Little Kulala

The Deadvlei is close to this luxurious desert retreat that sports its own access gate to Sossusvlei, the Namib-Naukluft National Park and some of the highest dunes in the world. The abundance of space plus the texture served as inspiration for the luxury lodge, with its bleached white floors a reflection of the surface of the Dead Vlei, while its walls are a traditional blend of sand and pigment. A stone’s throw from the lodge is a waterhole that attracts desert life in the form of flocks of sandgrouse, springbok and ostrich. Pass the evenings in the romantic wine cellar with good company and vintage wines.

Nambwa Tented Lodge

Set on an island, Nambwa Tented Lodge is like a treehouse for grown-ups. The lodge is set above ground, built among the treetops to allow wildlife, and more specifically elephant, to pass underneath on their instinctive trails, undisturbed. The rooms are linked by wooden walkways that pass through the foliage of the Bwabwata National Park. Take a boat cruise to discover an isolated a spot of sundowners.

Strand Hotel

It’s a cliche, but there’s a reason why walks along the beach are a honeymoon staple; there’s nothing more romantic than sand between your toes and your significant other by your side. Set in quirky Swakopmund, the Strand Hotel is located on the best spot in town, with views of the Atlantic from three sides. The luxury rooms are modern with floor-to-ceiling panoramic sliding doors and step out balconies. Combine your stay with a couple’s therapy spa treatment plus dinner at one of the three atmospheric on-sight restaurants.

Villa Mushara

With only two villas, a stay at Villa Mushara is exclusive and completely secluded. Each villa has its own private library within the 140 square metre living space. Only eight kilometres from the Etosha National Park’s Von Lindequist Gate means game drives are a cinch.

Fish River Lodge

It feels like being on the edge of the world. The Fish River Canyon is the second largest in the world, and the Fish River Lodge sits right on its lip, looking out over its ancient-cut rocks. Open skies and silence make this a clear honeymoon hot spot.

Damaraland Camp

Damaraland Camp is set in the Torra Conservancy, one of the most pristine wilderness areas of Namibia. With sensational views of the desolate plains that surround it, the camp’s ten elevated eco-friendly thatched units are a luxury in the desert. From your room, spot the peak of the Brandberg Mountain, the highest point in Namibia.

Chobe Water Villas

Rivers are life. Chobe Water Villas is the perfect place to celebrate the start of a life together. A lush green surrounds the boutique lodge, while the modern interior makes for a perfect honeymoon setting. 180 degree views, snorting hippos, flitting birds and the rush of water complete the wonderfully wild destination. Even better, take a day trip to the Victoria Falls, famously named after England’s 19th century queen.

Kanaan N/a’an ku sê Desert Retreat

The desert spreads out before you in an unobstructed view, and as the sun sinks heavily over the edge of the horizon it sets the air alight in a warm glow. Each room’s private deck catches the sun’s last rays, for a romantic conclusion. The retreat, part of the larger N/a’an ku sê conservation initiative, is 33 000 hectares of unspoilt nature and rehabilitated land. Make your stay exciting with a cheetah feeding or set off by horse to explore the fossilised camelthorn trees reminiscent of the Deadvlei (without the crowds).
