We at Venture Publications, Namibia’s publishing company of tourism and environmental magazines, deeply mourn the loss of our dear friend and close colleague, photographer and filmmaker, Paul van Schalkwyk, whose light aircraft crashed in the world-famous Etosha National Park in northern Namibia on Sunday 09 March.

His sudden and tragic death is an inestimable loss to Namibia, especially to the tourism industry and the flying community in the country.
Paul was a gifted entrepreneur and businessman. In the nineties he established PC Centre, specialists in AppleMac equipment. This was followed by Namibia’s only commercial television company, One Africa.
In 1993 he initiated the prestigious tourism magazines Travel New Namibia and annual tourism directory, Namibia Holiday & Travel, and the Namibia Trade Directory.
This was followed by the annual Conservation and Huntinamibia magazines, and a series of books: Etosha 100 – celebrating a hundred years of conservation in Namibia; Birds of Namibia; Namib – secrets of a desert uncovered; My Hungry Heart; and Skeleton Coast.
Our hearts go out to Paul’s wife Riéth, his son Henri, his daughter Nina, his mother Elize, and to the rest of his family in Namibia and South Africa. May his soul rest in peace.

Such a tragic loss for both Paul’s family and Namibia. In the many short trips I made to Namibia, I got to know Paul as an immense character, creative genius and sheer down-to-earth decent guy – a big personality who filled his space on the Namibian stage….. Rest in peace big man.
RIP Paul, you were a true son of Africa.
Dear Rieth and family,
