Windhoek’s own Cape Town Fish Market restaurant

When word on the street is a new restaurant in Windhoek, with panoramic views and plenty of outside seating, the entire capital flocks to get in on the hype.

Cape Town Fish Market opened a mere 2 weeks ago at Am Weinberg Estate in Windhoek and is already the talk of the town – with their striped cabanas, stellar décor and fantastic service, they’re giving their fellow eateries a run for their money.

After having tried to pop in on a Wednesday afternoon and failing, as they’re fully booked pretty much 24/7, we reserved a table on the balcony for lunch. It was 2 pm on a Thursday, yet the lunch hour (and accompanying crowd) was still in full swing.

Despite numerous business meetings and family lunches keeping the staff busy, our waitress quickly introduced herself and brought our ordered rose and grapefruit G&T and “Moscow Mule” (that’s a dash of Vodka laced with mint and ginger beer) in a matter of minutes. If you’re not a keen cocktail drinker, their wine selection is also superb and the menu has many non-alcoholic options as well.

The menu consists of an extensive sushi selection with lovely alternatives like prawn and avo tacos and rice paper rolls. Though the mussel bake seemed tempting we decided on a platter of interesting sushi pairings, including mango and avocado and tuna crispy rice rolls.

Our food, served with a smile, arrived much faster than expected. The seared tuna tacos were packed with flavour and the rice paper rolls (quite the unconventional menu item around here) were refreshing and generous.

The make or break of any seafood and sushi restaurant, in my opinion, is its generosity with wasabi and pickled ginger, simply because I always finish it before the meal is over. In the case of Cape Town Fish Market, there was enough of both to feed a village and then some.

Us not having had a warm seafood meal meant I can neither confirm nor deny our neighbour’s claims of bones in his meal. But when the fish is fresh, bones are par for the course, especially and when cooked to perfection by Chef Shaun.

Cape Town Fish Market has a fantastic outdoor atmosphere and lends itself well to drinks and shared meals with friends. The prices are a bit of a splurge, but Namibians are always willing to put down an extra buck for a breathtaking view and exceptional bubbly. Well worth the visit!
