Namibian Heritage Week will take place from today to the on 30th September, 2012.

Heritage can be simply defined as the things that we feel are important and would like to preserve for future generations – including our cultural traditions and beautiful natural environment.

Heritage Week has gradually grown over the last few years and seeks to promote Namibia’s cultural and natural heritage.  The main aim of the week is to encourage more Namibians to visit our Art Galleries, Heritage Sites, Museums and Game Parks or to attend a cultural performance.

The theme for this year’s Heritage Week is `I Love My Culture’ and people are being encouraged (with the permission of their employer !) to wear traditional clothing to work or an item that helps to celebrate Namibia’s rich cultural diversity.  A fingerprint has been chosen as the symbol for this year’s event to indicate that culture provides each of us with our unique identity.

I love my culture – Namibia Heritage Week

A number of heritage institutions have introduced special events to encourage more visitors during the week.

  • the National Museum of Namibia will provide `backstage’ tours of its collections
  • the National Heritage Council is offering free entry for Namibians to all its major heritage sites
  • the National Archives of Namibia is mounting an exhibition in partnership with the `Stolen Moments’ project that will cover the history of music in Namibia
  • the Museums Association of Namibia will be launching a new series of posters promoting Namibian museums.

We would like to encourage all Namibians to celebrate culture and support our heritage institutions during Heritage Week.  Culture is at the root of our unique Namibian identity, so let us all take the opportunity to celebrate together.
