Presentation by Tycho van der Hoog: Namibia and its beer – a historical perspective

The history of beer in Namibia is a fascinating tale about a centuries´ long tradition of home brewing, the arrival of German knowledge and skills, the turbulent years of drinking during apartheid and the remarkable transformation of Namibia Breweries Limited, making Namibian beer world renowned. The consumption and production of beer in Namibia is closely intertwined with the general history of the country and gives valuable insights into the relationship between market and state. In this talk, the speaker will present the first findings of a six months research project on this topic. Prost!

Tycho van der Hoog (MPhil) studied history and political science at Leiden University, where he conducted a three month field research in Zambia. He is currently affiliated to the African Studies Centre in Leiden and spends six months in Namibia for research. At the core of his research interest is the relationship between states and markets in the development of nationalism.
