The collared desert lion, XPL-68 known as the “Terrace male”, seems to be making a second attempt to cross the Kunene river into Angola. Desert lion researcher, Dr Flip Stander has been tracking the movements of the “Terrace male” for the past week.

In August, the lion braved the crocodile infested Kunene river to swim 76 metres across into Angola. It was the first time in more than two decades that such behavior was observed by a desert lion. Stander described it as a “significant event” as it marked the return of the desert lion to the southern parts of Angola.

After more than two weeks in Angola, the “Terrace male” once again took on fate to swim back onto Namibian shores. He then undertook another lengthy journey back to his home territory at the Hoaruseb river area.

For now, we wait with bated breath to see if he will do it again.
