Robert Bekker (43) and Hendrik van Wyk (56), two long-time tour guides and drivers at Springbok Atlas Tours & Safaris in Namibia, lost their lives in a tragic head on head collision on Tuesday night, just after 19H00. The driver of the Namibia Dairies truck, Mr Fablius Nangaku, also passed away due to injuries sustained in the collision.
The accident took place 20 km north of Okahandja on Tuesday night. It has been reported that the bus, which was transporting Namibia Diamond Corporation staff to Oranjemund, collided head on with a truck transporting products from Namibia Dairies to Oshakati.
Seven people died in the crash. Ten others sustained injuries, including a two-month-old baby.
Robert Bekker’s sudden passing left his friends, family and colleagues reeling. A popular figure on several online forums, he was known for regularly posting photos of Namibia, a country he was passionate about, from his tours across the country.
In one forum, where he was a regular contributor, a post announcing his passing away resulted in dozens of comments mourning his loss and sending well wishes to his family, friends and colleagues. One post read “I didn’t know him personally, but he was a familiar character here. We got to know him through the photos he posted, especially of nature, and his comments. My deepest condolences go out to his family. We will miss him”.
