Where to Find Live Music in WindhoekSeptember 11, 2017
2017 marks the 125th birthday anniversary of Swakopmund and the big bash to celebrate the journey took place from 4-6 August. The bash served as a reminder of its development over the years and the rich cultural diversity.
Swakopmund, then and now
Exactly 125 years ago, Swakopmund was founded by Captain Curt von François on 4 August 1892 (two years after he had founded Windhoek). It was to become the main harbour for the Imperial German colony.
Today, Swakopmund is the colourful activity hub of the country with its history reflected in the German architecture lining the streets. It is the administrative capital of the Erongo Region that approximately 60 000 inhabitants call home.
A time for fun
The celebration officially opened on Friday, August 4 at the Swakopmund amphitheatre. Visitors wandered through stalls selling delicious food and snacks, as well as a variety of arts and crafts. The festival also provided entertainment with a beverages tent, a parade, traditional sports, music and dance performances, jumping castles, and much more. Athletes were able to break a sweat in both 7-a-side beach soccer and volleyball.
A grand parade took place through the streets of this quaint coastal town on said Saturday. Accompanied by the Namibian Navy Band, it definitely put everyone gathered in a festive mood.
On Sunday, the festivities were suitably concluded with a church service. All the residents and congregations were invited to end the weekend on a high note.
