The N/a’an ku sê Wildlife Sanctuary started out as a single property east of Windhoek and only a few kilometres from the international airport. Since then it has expanded to include three other establishments, namely Utopia Boutique Hotel in Windhoek, Kanaan N/a’an ku sê Desert Retreat close to Sossusvlei, and Neuras Wine and Wildlife Estate near the Namib-Naukluft National Park. What sets them apart from other conservation organisations is the range of activities available for visitors. Which is why we’ve compiled a short list of our top ten favourite ways to pass the time at N/a’an ku sê.

On a misty Swakopmund afternoon we walk through the front gate of Salty Jackal Backpackers and Surf Camp, an accommodation establishment centred around the cultures of surfing and free-spirited travellers. The laid-back atmosphere is immediately tangible.

Namibia is well known for its diverse, vast landscapes and abundant ocean life. The latter make it a premium fishing destination.

I wonder if any of those pioneers in the early 1900s ever saw Barlow’s
Lark (Calendulauda barlowi) at Pomona, or the Dune Lark (C.
erythrochlamys) in the dunes near Lüderitz? Looking at the barren
‘killing fields’ those diamond hunters left behind as memories for
later generations, I doubt it very much. I suppose the diamond’s
blinding effect on your eyes has the same effect on your mind. In
the end, it’s the larks that are still around, and not those diamond
hunters.

It is our tradition, whenever the Sesriem Canyon fills with water, to go and swim there. In January the time had come again.

Stepping out of routine has never been this rewarding, and the eastern part of the Great White Place is a worthy addition to every traveller’s Etosha itinerary.

Despite being the most trafficked animal in the world, there is surprisingly little known about pangolins.

Situated some 10 kilometres west of Omaruru and roughly a two-hour drive from Windhoek, Erongo Wild invites guests to become absorbed by the natural beauty of the Erongo Mountains. It is a place brimming with life, which is evident as soon as you arrive. You are immediately surrounded by the calls of White-browed Sparrow-weavers, African Red-eyed Bulbul and a chorus of Rosy-faced Lovebirds – sounds that will become synonymous with Erongo Wild.

Summer in Namibia is the festive and holiday season. It is the time of a great trek northwards from the capital on the central highland, to traditional homes and families or westward to the cool Atlantic coast and social gatherings, big sporting events and lazy beach days.

It is mid-April. We are doing a canoe trip down the Orange River from Vioolsdrift to Sendelingsdrift by courtesy of Umkulu Safaris, based at The Growcery (spelling correct) on the southern bank of the river.

At first I am somewhat nervous about driving on the left side, but luckily this fades after a while. The road is long and straight. Around sunset, we marvel at the colours of the landscape – pastel and gold!

As I stand on a sandy hill dipped in bronze, the sun presents its colours for the day and I could cry. It’s perfection and I am reminded of the saying that simple things can be the best. Nature, light and Namibian coffee.

My infamous career as a bird watcher started when I was 24 years old. A very dear and kind friend invited me to go with him and his wife to Ndumo Game Reserve in Northern KwaZulu-Natal. If they told me beforehand that this will end up in a birding trip, I would have refused point blank.

I cannot find the word for “that feeling when you return to a place of familial significance, a place your heart remembers but you have no living memory of”.
