All over the world visitors are attracted to the obvious must-sees. To those images which catch the eye on a TV screen, in a travel magazine or on a billboard. Images are the most powerful tool in tourism and luckily, Namibia is one of the most photogenic destinations. There are so many places in our country begging one to come closer, look deeper and become part of the picture.

There is an infinite number of places in Namibia vying to be considered the most romantic spot in the country, but I believe the number one sign of an endorsement is an engagement. Because when you decide to pop the question - the big one - when you get down on your knees, you better be sure that the place you are kneeling in is epic enough to make her say yes without stammering.

Road-trips are the best, aren’t they? Perhaps it’s because of film culture, where we’ve been fed with the romance of road trips, of getting out, hitting the road, with the wide-open skies overhead and just a vague destination in our minds. In Namibia, the first half of the year has two great opportunities for road trips, the first being the Independence holiday and the second the Easter long weekend. All you have to do is put in one or two days leave and take a trip. But where to, you ask? The most famous park in Namibia, of course. Take a road trip to Etosha and make it a trip to remember. Here’s how:

Etosha National Park, the jewel in the crown of Namibia, is the country’s most visited and popular tourism destination. After months of bad reports on the current condition of the roads in the park, several companies and private individuals have joined forces to help the government with the daunting task it is faced with – the maintenance of Etosha’s road infrastructure. Severe droughts in the region have meant a shortage of operational funds. In August 2019, FNB Namibia stepped forward to help with the much-needed road upgrades.

Photographer Jandré Germishuizen grew up with a love for Namibia’s nature that led him to study conservation and guiding in South Africa. However, after returning to his homeland, Jandré gradually became more interested in turning his photography hobby into a career.

Kaokoland lures lovers of remote and wild places. Extending south from the Kunene River across a sparsely populated and harsh environment down to the Hoanib River, the area is home to the semi-nomadic Himba people. The rugged terrain tempts drivers who come to put their four-wheel-drive vehicles to the test as they negotiate challenging routes such as Van Zyl's pass. Other travellers hope to see the desert-adapted elephants, visit the impressive Epupa Falls, go to off-the-beaten-track destinations such as the expansive Marienfluss and Hartmann valleys, experience the wild and beautiful Khowarib Schlucht, and visit historic Witbooisdrift, site of a Dorslandtrekker monument.

A strip of desert sand that stretches from the Kunene to the Orange rivers, hugging Namibia’s coastline north to south. The Namib Sand Sea, a UNESCO World Heritage Site stretching between the Kuiseb River and Tsau //Khaeb National Park, is a mass of rolling dunes in shades of gold, ochre, and honey, that tumble into the cobalt-blue water.
